Thatching is a diversifed building technique that has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. There is a wide range of thatching materials available. Thatch roofs do not catch fire any more frequently than other combustible roof materials, but thatch roofs are difficult to extinquish once the fire takes hold. The damage is more severe and thatch roofs are more expensive to replace. Thatch Safe™ fire retardant (exterior or interior use) can be applied to bamboo, thatch and thatching, thatch roofs, Tiki huts, cypress, and koa. Flame Safe’s Thatch Safe™ flame retardant is quick and easy to apply. A water based clear fire retardant, Thatch Safe™ is odorless, colorless, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. Very little material preparation is required before using Flame Safe's Thatch Safe™. Surfaces should be clean and dry. Apply one (1) coat at 150 sq. ft. to 200 sq. ft. per gallon or two (2) coats at 300 to 400 sq. ft per gallon with the final coverage rate of 150 to 200 sq. ft. per gallon. Thatch Safe can be applied by brush, roller or sprayer.

Three components are necessary for fire: fuel, oxygen, and a source of ignition. Although you need to eliminate only one of these three components to extinguish a fire, Thatch Safe™ fire retardant produces outstanding results by eliminating two of these components.       Thatch Safe™ fire retardant automatically reacts with fire or heat and converts combustible gases and tars to non-combustible carbon char. This chemical reaction substantially increases carbon char and creates an intumescing action, causing the surface to bubble-up and thereby creating a barrier between the fire and the treated material. The nitrogen produced as a by-product of the bubbling-up action displaces the oxygen, thus smothering the fire. The intumescing action separates the fuel from the source of ignition. Thatch Safe™ fire retardant treated materials produce significantly less smoke generation, in many cases by more than 50%.
